Red Feather Endowment Society
In the late 1940s, the red feather was the symbol for hundreds of Community Chests, War Chests and United Appeals throughout the country that combined to become what we now know as the United Way. Created by H.J. Heinz II and the H.J. Heinz Company when Mr. Heinz served as chairman of the Community Chests of America, the red feather became a familiar logo representing a community-wide appeal to help those in need. Eventually, the red feather gave way to the helping hand and rainbow logo that now symbolizes United Way.
United Way of Allegheny County commemorates the Heinz legacy with The Red Feather Endowment Society, whose members leave a lasting impact on our community by making a bequest either through a will or by designating United Way as the beneficiary of an IRA, a life insurance policy or other asset controlled by beneficiary designation.
We take this opportunity to thank those who have made a planned gift commitment to our United Way endowment.
