Tocqueville Society
The Tocqueville Society was founded by United Way of America in March 1984 to deepen the understanding, commitment, and support of high wealth individuals to local United Ways and to recognize the deep commitment to service exemplified in the national Alexis de Tocqueville Society Award. Society membership is granted to individuals who contribute at least $10,000 annually to United Way.
Specific program objectives include:

Enhancing local recognition of long-standing service volunteers in ways that foster voluntary community service

Expanding high-level personal giving and major giving programs with high standards

Building local and national links to enhance and strengthen local leadership development and the impact of major gifts in the community
Since 1985, members of United Way of Allegheny County’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society have set the standard for leadership giving and humanitarian service in the Greater Pittsburgh community through their substantial, annual contributions in support of local agencies and programs. The following categories of local membership acknowledge increasing levels of generosity by our donors:

Step-Up Options for Tocqueville Society
United Way of Allegheny County offers this special giving option to enable community leaders to “Step-Up” to the Tocqueville contributor level over a period of three or five years. Donors make a commitment now to incrementally increase their annual United Way gift, building to a full $10,000 annual gift. The primary benefit to donors is that they are recognized as Tocqueville Society members from year one. This includes receiving special mailings and invitations to Tocqueville events and being listed at the Tocqueville giving level in the United Way of Allegheny County’s annual directory of Leadership contributors.
